You surely will wonder what your child does all day in school but have difficulty getting your student to share about it. I encourage parents to visit often. It is nice to have a note ahead of time notifying me of when you plan to come. However, I would rather have you stop in unannounced rather than not at all. I do ask that you wait to visit until at least two weeks after the beginning of the school year. The first few weeks are a time of adjustments and the children are easily distracted. Thank you!
The following is an outline of some of the activities we do during the day.
POCKET CHECKS:
It is requested that you check pockets and backpacks before your child leaves for school each day to make sure money and small toys are left at home. These items cause distractions and are often lost or broken. Food intended for sharing with the class needs to be arranged ahead of time. Thank you. If you need to send money, remember to put it in a sealed envelope with your child’s name, teacher’s name, amount enclosed, and a note about the purpose of the money.
CALENDAR ACTIVITIES:
-Keeping track of the days of school, working with skip counting (by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s).
-Weather graphing.
-Days of the week/months of the year.
-Calendar patterns (For example: AB or AABC).
-Yesterday was ______, Today is _______, and Tomorrow will be ______.
LANGUAGE ARTS:
-Exposure to a variety of literature.
-Reading books independently, with each other, and with me at their own level of reading AND comprehension.
-Writing using “Inventive” or “Kindergarten” spelling as well as “Grown-Up” spelling.
-Sequencing, rhyming, chronological story telling, and phonics.
-Expository and Narrative writing introductions.
MATH:
-Hands-On learning using problem solving and higher-level thinking strategies to allow the children to understand math concepts.
LUNCH:
For the current kindergarten lunch time, ask me or call the office at (309)663-2351. A lunch menu and prices will go home the first day of school. We do not use tickets for lunch anymore. The children have an “account.” You can put as much money into their account as you like. Each day they get a lunch, the cost will be deducted from their “account.” If you cannot come in to pay, you can send money with your student. PLEASE PUT ALL MONEY INTO A SEALED, LABELED ENVELOPE any time you send money to school. Free and reduced lunches are available for those who qualify.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
-Integrated themes to allow children to “live” social studies objectives.
SCIENCE:
-Hand-On activities in which the children will discover science.
SPECIALIST TIME:
-Weekly visits each with the Art, Music, Media and PE teachers.
BACKPACKS:
Very important! Please have your child wear a LARGE backpack to school every day. PLEASE CHECK YOUR CHILD’S BACKPACK DAILY so that important information is not overlooked.
